Good Eats: Liliha Bakery

The famous Liliha Bakery coco puff is a creme puff filled with chocolate pudding topped with chantilly cream.  It's light, it's chocolaty, and it's refreshing.  The coco puff receives the Eu-jeania stamp of approval for fine eating.  I had to drive halfway across the island to pick up a box of these one day, luckily Liliha Bakery is  also a good place to eat.  One of the best thing about this diner is the breakfast.

Liliha Bakery is located at 515 North Kuakini Street View Larger Map
This place is a bakery as well as a diner.  Centrally located in Kalihi, near Pearl Harbor and past Punchbowl National Cemetery.  Liliha Bakery is open from Tuesday 6:00 am to Sunday 8:00 pm and closed on Sundays.  Yes, you read that right, this place is open 24 hours a day between Tuesday morning to Sunday night.

This place gets crowded, particularly around breakfast and mid-morning.  We came for the coco-puffs, but since we're hungry we decided to try their breakfast.  There are no reservations, it was first-come, first-serve seating at the counter.

Here are the pie and cake specials of the week.  Eu-jeania got mad since we just missed the Chantilly cake by a day.  Maybe next time.

We decided to try one of their biscuits with their lilikoi jam.  The jam was amazing.  So amazing, we bought two jars to take home.

While these pancakes aren't as big as the pancakes from the Mac-Daddy Challenge, they are big, fluffy, and have a huge serving of butter on top.  Add a side order of bacon and a cup of coffee and your set for breakfast.

Eu-jeania decided to try the the local favorite: spam, eggs, and rice.  I don't eat spam much away from the Islands and really don't know the attraction that spam has, but it just works with eggs and rice.

So after a good breakfast, grab a ticket and wait for your number to be called.  Sometimes the wait can be for a good 10 or 15 minutes.  Also, there was a guided tour that stopped by here.  We talked with one of the tour guides and there's a regular tour for

There's a lot of goodness on those shelves.  I can't go into all of them, you just have to stop by and try them.

And don't forget about the jam.  Lilikoi (also known as passion fruit) only grows in tropical climates and this is one of the few places to get lilikoi jam.

And finally, the coco-puff.  I'm not sure what makes it better than the regular creme-puff, but Eu-jeania thinks it's the chantilly cream combined with the chocolate filling that adds that special touch.  This coco-puff is a must try on your trip to Hawaii.

The coco-puff is so special there's even a food tour that stops by Liliha Bakery.  If you're interested, check out the link at Hawaii Food Tours.  I haven't done it myself, so I can't recommend it one way or another, but it does have good reviews.
